The Help

Once I get started on a book I really like, I can never put it down. One of my new discoveries (and my first Kindle purchase), was The Help by Kathryn Stockett.

This book touched me in so many ways. I was pulled in by the dramatic setting of 1960s Jackson, Mississippi and the brutal racial discrimination that was rampant at that time. The books possesses a number of main characters acting as the first person point-of-view in alternate chapters. It is the story of the clear division between the African-American house help and their rich, white employers. A variety of families, personalities, and heart-wrenching stories appear in a beautiful plot. While reading, I felt as though I, myself, was watching the scenes live in Jackson, Mississippi. The stories of the women house help are fascinating, and the ending was where I cried my eyes out.

The best part about it? Hollywood is turning it into a movie. With thorough research, goosebumps ran through my arms as I discovered which movie star would be playing which particular character in the book. I cannot wait until I get to watch these book characters come to life in the movie. If I cried at the end of my read, I'll need a bucket to hold my tears when I see it all in motion-picture.
